
The Leon and Arline Harman Foundation is pleased to announce a new scholarship program offered to employees of certain companies in the retail food distribution industry.
This program is designed to help employees who would have a difficult time financially attending college.
1. Have worked for one of the companies on the Foundation’s approved list for at least one year before being eligible for the Scholarship. (1 year of employment by the time school starts.) The approved list contains all companies in the Harman Management consulting or food distribution network.
2. Be a U.S. citizen or have an alien registration card.
3. Have a combined annual income for yourself and your parents, if still a dependent of your parents, of less than $100,000 for those living in the San Francisco Bay area, and $75,000 for employees living in all other areas. Those applicants who are no longer a dependent of their parents should use their income along with their spouse’s income (if applicable) to determine income eligibility. Note: If there are extraordinary circumstances regarding these financial requirements they will be considered on a case by case basis.
4. Be a high school graduate with at least a 2.8 grade point average or have earned a GED certificate.
A. A written recommendation from your manager/supervisor.
B. A one to two page personal statement letter including the following:
(1) Academic plans and goals for the future.
(2) A statement of why you should be considered for a scholarship.
(3) Give an example of how you have used your motivation and initiative to solve problems in your life.
(4) Describe some challenges in your life that you have had to overcome.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Both full and part-time students are encouraged to apply. The maximum amount of scholarship money that will be awarded each academic year is $4,000, with no more than $2,000 to be funded in any one semester. Funds must be used to cover tuition, books and student fees. In order to retain the scholarship, the following criteria must be met:
A. The student must be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
Trade schools, cosmetology schools, etc. are not eligible for the
scholarship.
B. The student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
C. A minimum of 6 credit hours per semester must be maintained.
2. Students already enrolled in an accredited college or university are eligible to apply as long as they have a 2.5 GPA.
3. Scholarships will be conditionally awarded, until the student can verify that they have been officially admitted to the college or university of their choice.
4. The duration of the Scholarship is for one year, but may be renewed at the completion of the academic year. Renewal will be based on the student having positive academic progress and a GPA of 2.5 or better and showing a continued financial need.
